Fight for Clean Water Faces Challenges from Every Angle

February 20, 2025
With Florida’s water quality under fire, approaching Legislative Session demands our vigilance.

As we head into spring, there’s no shortage of critical water quality issues demanding our attention. From Big Sugar’s legal battles over the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir to a proposed rock mine threatening Everglades Restoration, red tide creeping along Florida’s gulf coast, and Lake Okeechobee discharges, the fight for clean water is as urgent as ever.

But the most pressing issue on the horizon? The 2025 Florida Legislative Session kicked off on March 4th, and we expect a lot to happen this year.

What’s at Stake?

With lawmakers set to make key decisions on water policy, we must stay engaged. One bill already on our radar is Senate Bill 7002, which pertains to water management districts. While details are still unfolding, we’ll be keeping a close watch and sharing updates on how this legislation could impact water quality.

Meanwhile, we’re also awaiting a decision on Big Sugar’s lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers over the EAA Reservoir, a critical Everglades restoration project. A ruling from the appellate court is expected any day now.

On top of that, Big Sugar is pushing a controversial rock mine in the Everglades Agricultural Area, a move that could have devastating consequences and set a dangerous precedent.

And let’s not forget what’s happening on our coasts. Red tide has been lingering along Florida’s west coast and even into the Keys, with Lake Okeechobee discharges threatening to make matters worse on both coasts.

Why Legislative Session Matters

Needless to say, there’s a lot going on and no shortage of threats to our water quality heading into Legislative Session. The next few months will determine whether Florida strengthens its commitment to clean water—or allows special interests to continue dictating policy. That’s why we must remain vigilant, informed, and ready to act when legislation that affects our waterways comes up for debate.

We’ll be following every development closely and providing updates as bills move through the legislature. We need your voice to be ready in this fight. Whether it’s contacting your representatives, sharing updates, or showing up when it counts, staying engaged is the best way to protect Florida’s waters.

Stay tuned—big things are coming, and we’ll need all hands on deck.
