3 WATER QUALITY ISSUES FACING SANIBEL ISLAND
Red tide, Red drift algae and Blue green algae persist in the Gulf of Mexico which has sadly caused a high volume of fish kills and resulted in dead marine life in recent days. Dead fish by the thousands have clogged inlets and canals and are cluttering the Sanibel Beaches. Recently, a whale shark along with manatees, dolphin, Goliath grouper, loads of fish, and sea turtles have washed up dead on the beaches of Sanibel Island.
WHAT ARE WE DOING TO HELP ADDRESS WATER QUALITY ISSUES ON SANIBEL ISLAND AND SW FLORIDA?
Captains for Clean Water started out as a group of fishing guides from Fort Myers, FL that “had enough” of Florida’s poor water management practices. We have witnessed the long-term decline of estuaries across Sanibel Island and many areas in south Florida – and we have seen the acceleration of that decline over just the last ten years. Inexplicably, no significant progress has been made to solve this enormous problem – and that is simply not acceptable to us.
Given the destruction we have seen firsthand, we are convinced that if everyone knew what we knew, this problem would have been fixed already. Unfortunately, the solution to this problem has been obstructed by large corporate agricultural interests and government mismanagement. The science has been proven time and time again- the state needs to acquire land south of Lake Okeechobee to store, treat and convey water south. This consensus solution has been delayed decades because our state’s lawmakers have enjoyed large-scale campaign contributions from agricultural corporations seeking to benefit from the status-quo, combined with a lack of public awareness. We’re here to fix that.

HELP SAVE OUR WATER FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Sanibel Island is facing a significant water management crisis
Sanibel Island needs a long-term solution that will allow us to divert and clean the nutrient-laden fresh water currently killing estuaries on and around Sanibel Island and the surrounding area, while not permitting high Lake Okeechobee levels to jeopardize the lives of those south of the lake. We need a solution to restore the natural sheet flow and provide much-needed, clean, fresh water to the Everglades, the South Florida aquifer and Florida Bay.
This solution must keep Floridians safe, while at the same time protecting the health of our marine ecosystems which are vital to our economy and way of life. We need immediate action on a long-term solution that will protect ALL Floridians. Read More…
