About Captains For Clean Water
Captains for Clean Water is a grassroots nonprofit organization advocating for south Florida’s water conditions.
Captains for Clean Water was founded in 2016 by a group of fishing guides and outdoorsmen from Fort Myers, FL that had enough of Florida’s poor water management practices. Given the destruction they’d seen firsthand, they were convinced that if everyone knew what they knew, the problem would have been already fixed. The solution to this problem has been delayed for decades because our state’s lawmakers have enjoyed large-scale campaign contributions from agricultural corporations seeking to benefit from the status quo, combined with a lack of public awareness.
We’re here to fix that.
Captains for Clean Water is committed to protecting Florida’s most valuable resource: Water
Through advancing education, awareness, and advocacy, we fight to ensure that our policymakers implement scientifically supported solutions to restore and protect marine ecosystems and our way of life for future generations.
In 2017, Captains for Clean Water was on the front lines in Tallahassee fighting for Senate Bill 10. This legislation authorized and funded the State of Florida’s share of the EAA Reservoir. In conjunction with the Central Everglades Plan and increased bridging of Tamiami Trail, this project will provide over a 50% reduction in Lake Okeechobee discharges, and desperately needed freshwater to the Everglades and Florida Bay. Everglades restoration projects are a 50/50 cost share between the State of Florida and the federal government. Captains for Clean Water is working to gain federal authorization for the EAA Reservoir in the Water Resources Development Act of 2018. Over 25,000 members and supporters of Captains for Clean Water have contacted their federal representatives in support of this project as of October 1, 2018.
